September is Sexual Health Awareness Month

Sexual health is as important as any other sector regarding your individual health and wellness. With September being sexual health awareness month, it is important to understand what sexual health really means and how you can improve yours.

The American Sexual Health Association (ASHA) defines sexual health as,

“the ability to embrace and enjoy our sexuality throughout our lives. It is an important part of our physical and emotional health.”

Sexual health includes acceptance as a normal part of life that is not limited to the act of sex, acknowledging and respecting everyone’s sexual rights, access to information, education and care, trying to prevent and/or treat unintended pregnancy and STDs, ability to be sexually pleased to satisfaction, and ability to communicate about all aspects above with partners and care providers.

Given this definition and all that it encompasses, there is plenty to keep up with in order to maintain your sexual health. Men particularly have plenty to pay attention to in order to achieve prime sexual health. When something physically is not right, it is referred to as male sexual dysfunction. There is no need to panic at the term, as there is nothing critically wrong and there are plenty of treatments available. There are four common types of male sexual dysfunction: erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, delayed/inhibited ejaculation and low libido. Erectile dysfunction is inability to get or maintain an erection.

With several causes there are also several treatments available, with one of the most common being prescription sildenafil. Premature ejaculation is reaching orgasm too quickly and is often left undiscussed due to embarassment. One popular treatment is the stop start method where your partner will stimulate your penis and then stop three times, finally allowing you to orgasm after the fourth time.

Delayed ejaculation is reaching orgasm too slowly or not at all. Again there are many causes, and treatment of this dysfunction depends upon the cause. Low libido is a reduced interest in sex. One of the leading causes of low libido is low testosterone and one of the ways to treat low testosterone is through testosterone replacement therapy, you can learn more about the two here.
